Frequently asked Questions:

Q: Why do you specialize in Ipe’?

A: It is the premier decking choice for our clients. There is no substitute. We are familiar with, and have installed just about every type of decking there is. (other Hardwoods, Redwood , Cedar, and some Composite.) Ipe’ makes a deck you can beat up but always restore back to life.

Q: Is Ipe’ real or synthetic?

A: Ipe’ (pronounced eeh-pay) is a real wood, not treated in any way. It is harvest grown in regions ranging from Central to South America.

Q: How long will an Ipe’ deck last?

A: Minimum 20 years and well beyond if sub-structure is built properly.

Q: Is Ipe’ more environmentally friendly than Trex?

A: The choice is simple. Do you want to build with a sustainable, harvested tree that is replenished with another?; or introduce more plastic into the environment.

Q: Does Ipe’ outlast Trex and other composte decking?

A: In our experience a clear YES. Most synthetic decking is a composite of recycled materials and plastic. Like particle board. - Ipe’ is incredibly strong due to the natural cellulose fibers within. (In California climate composites have a tendency to warp and loose their color in the hot sun over time.)

Q: Why would I choose Malibu Deck Doctor?

A: Because Malibu Deck Doctor provides a level of professional customer service that is lacking these days. Our carpentry skills are top level. The owner oversees every project personally and won’t settle for an unhappy customer. You won’t feel overwhelmed by the process.

Q: Do you use other materials besides Ipe”

A: We also use California Redwood, Western Cedar, and some Composites for deck and exterior projects. (Pressure treated) wood is used for substructure of decks.

Q. Do you build decks out of pressure treated lumber?

A.: No. Absolutely not. Pressure treated wood is very toxic. Even in California, where the product chemical levels are the safest, pressure treated lumber is still considered a hazardous material. Not recommended for human contact. Old pressure treated lumber is the greatest culprit. It has more harmful effects on nature and needs to be disposed in a very strict manner.

Q: Don’t wooden decks rot out?

A: All wood rots. That being said, Redwood and Cedar average 10-15 years life on horizontal surfaces (decks), and 10 -25 years on vertical surfaces (fences, siding). Amazingly, Ipe’ has a lifespan at least twice that.! Redwood and Cedar are strong but considered softwoods, somewhat termite resistant and prone to decay, but Ipe’ is one of the hardest woods on the planet. It is extremely durable, decay resistant and essentially termite-proof.

Q: Why is the Ipe’ wood more expensive than redwood or cedar?

A: It is an imported wood. That’s pretty much it. If you lived in Brazil, California Redwood would be at a premium.

Q: Is Ipe’ fireproof?

A: No wood is truly “fireproof” but; Ipe’ maintains a Class A Fire Rating with the state of California. That seems impossible but true. An Ipe’ deck is far more likely to survive a brush fire than any other type of decking material.

Q; Do you have references?

A: Yes. We have been top rated by sites like (BBB TRUSTLINK) and (ANGI) since back when the references were organic, unsolicited reviews.

Q: Will an Ipe’ deck increase the value of my house?

A: Absolutely. In every report a new Ipe’ deck increases the resale value of the home and pays for itself. The value of an Ipe’ deck is recognized by the real estate industry. A new deck is a welcome feature on any property.

Q: What type maintenance is required on an Ipe’ deck?

A: When we build a deck, we apply one of a few choices of finishes to allow the deck to be protected for the first year or two. After this time, and the deck has seasoned, the Ipe’ may be left to naturally “grey out” or it can be re-finished to it’s original luster with a natural oil.

Q: How long does it take to build a deck?

A: Naturally the size matters but for the most part, after the permitting process is approved, most decks are completed in 2-3 weeks. Exceptions are hillside decks that may require more complicated engineering. Special orders also have an effect, occasionally due to manufacture’s lead times.

Q: Does Ipe’ turn Grey?

A: Yes. Ipe’ will beautifully patina to a natural silver grey.

Q: How often do I need to re-finish my deck?

A: The climate will usually determine that. The thing to remember is, that it is oil that ultimately nurtures the wood. Color keeps it from greying. Natural finishes with less pigment will grey faster. Normal re-finish schedule is every 2-5 years (depending on wear).

Q: Is an Ipe” deck warrantied?

A: We offer a 10 year workmanship guaranty with all our work. We are confident in our specialized methods and products. We don’t get callbacks!

Q; Is there a long lead time when ordering Ipe?

A: Ipe’ is imported into the country by several suppliers and is usually on job site within (3) weeks of order.

Q: Do you supply 3D renderings?

A; Yes.

Q: Can we trust workers on the job site?
